Our Story

Rooted in Healing. Grown with Passion. Fermented with Purpose. Feast of Eden Fermentary began with a simple but profound belief: food can be medicine, and fermentation has the power to transform lives.

Our Beginnings

I’m Michael Bird, the founder of Feast of Eden. Over the course of 25 years as a midwife in London, I witnessed firsthand how deeply nutrition impacted the health of pregnant women and their babies. These experiences planted a seed — a calling to support health at its foundation, starting with what we consume. In 2018, my sister and I adopted a plant-based lifestyle, a personal choice that coincided with my parents embarking on their own healing journey through naturopathic approaches while facing cancer. This pivotal moment in our family’s story ignited within me a profound passion for natural healing and purposeful living.

Discovering Fermentation

Determined to deepen my understanding of holistic health, I enrolled at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London and qualified as a Natural Vegan Chef. Little did I know, this path would lead me to the fascinating world of fermentation. My studies unveiled the immense importance of the gut microbiome, and with it, a newfound appreciation for its connection to wellness, energy, immunity, and mood.

Feast of Eden Takes Root

In 2022, I returned to South Africa, inspired and equipped with a clear vision: to start a fermentation business rooted in healing, education, and connection. In my parents’ kitchen in George, I began crafting vegan meals and probiotic-rich ferments, laying the foundation for Feast of Eden. From its inception, the fermentary was infused with purpose and intention.

Our Mission Today

Feast of Eden is proud to produce some of South Africa’s finest fermented foods — wild, raw, unpasteurized, and carefully crafted. Our mission is to support gut health and inspire people to reconnect with food that truly nourishes. What started as a personal journey has blossomed into a purpose-driven business. Feast of Eden is built on healing, community, and an unwavering love for fermentation. Welcome to Feast of Eden — where fermentation meets transformation.

Michael, I am so grateful to you for creating the delicious sauerkraut mixtures that I have tried.  I love the original and also the mint-infused.  Working with Dr Nicky Whiteman at our Gut Health Retreats, we always teach the participants about the delight of making your own fermented foods and how brilliant this is for supporting the Gut.  The only thing is, that not all of us have the time or inclination to make these homemade healing foods.  I am so grateful to have met you and to get your amazing products to support my family’s Gut Health program.  Thank you.
